If you could only watch one ADHD resource, aside from reading a book, it would be Russell Barkley's lectures on YouTube. Free. Accessible. And they taught me more in 3 hours than 6 months of forums.
Barkley is a clinical psychologist, professor, and probably the most cited researcher in the world on ADHD. He's been working on it for over 40 years. And unlike many researchers, he knows how to talk to people. No unnecessary jargon, concrete examples, a direct tone.
Why Barkley
There are a lot of people talking about ADHD online. Coaches, influencers, therapists, patients. And many say useful things. But Barkley is different. He's the one who defined the executive function theory of ADHD. He's the one who formulated the idea that ADHD is not an attention disorder but a self-regulation disorder.
When he says something, it's backed by decades of research. Not anecdotes, not opinions, not "I feel like." Data. And he translates it into human language, which is rare among researchers.
The key lectures
"Essential Ideas for Parents" (about 3h in several parts). Despite the title, it's not just for parents. It's the most comprehensive lecture I've seen on what ADHD is, how it works, and why traditional approaches (punishment, rewards, willpower) don't work.
One moment that stuck with me: Barkley explains that ADHD is a disorder of performance, not of knowledge. The ADHD brain knows what to do. It can't do what it knows. It's a simple distinction, but it changed how I see myself. I don't lack intelligence. I lack the ability to apply it on command.
"ADHD: Not Just for Children" (about 90 minutes). Focused on adult ADHD. Barkley talks about the impact on work, relationships, health, driving. Yes, driving. ADHD multiplies the risk of car accidents by 2 to 4, according to his data. That's the kind of thing nobody tells you at the time of diagnosis.

What struck me the most
The concept of time blindness. Barkley explains that the ADHD brain struggles to perceive time correctly. The future feels blurry, distant, unreal. That's why deadlines only motivate when they're imminent. Not out of laziness. Because the brain doesn't "see" the future the way a neurotypical brain does.
When I heard that, I understood why I do everything last minute. It's not a choice. It's a brain for which "in 3 weeks" means almost nothing until it becomes "tomorrow morning."
The other concept: ADHD as a self-regulation disorder, not an attention disorder. Barkley argues that attention is a symptom, not the core problem. The problem is the ability to self-regulate, to inhibit impulses, to organize actions over time, to motivate your own behavior. Attention follows from all of that. It's a broader, more accurate view that explains many more things than just "I can't focus."
Barkley's limits
Barkley leans heavily on genetics. For him, ADHD is primarily hereditary (he cites heritability of about 80%). He has little patience for approaches that emphasize environment, like Gabor Mate's. The two have publicly criticized each other.
I think both are right about some things and wrong about others. Barkley has the genetic data on his side. Mate has the understanding of the emotional experience. I read both and take what speaks to me from each.
And Barkley can be blunt. His tone is that of a scientist who has spent 40 years fighting misconceptions about ADHD. He no longer has the patience for diplomatic nuance. It's refreshing and sometimes a bit harsh.
